Bruce you mention the software update? Can I put the dmg file in somehow

No. Software Update contacts Apple's servers, downloads the needed updates, and installs them.

If it's a large update this can take a while, but even on dialup it's usually doable, just start it up at night and go to bed.

I am not quite sure I understand what is happening with your attempts to upgrade your 10.2.1 to 10.2.8. All the downloads can be saved as packages to be installed later from Software Update. Or, if you have downloaded an update directly from Apple as a .dmg file, after it opens and the checksum finishes you should be left with a virtual drive (normally on your desktop) containing the installer for the update. You then have to click and open that to get a package to do the install. It's only automatic if done through Software Update. (Not tryin' to be over-simplistic or talk down but what you describe above is missing a step).

If you are having trouble with one not working it may be a version of an upgrade that you can not directly go to from 10.2.1 There are a few versions (builds) of each progression. I recently reinstalled 10.2.1 and updated to 10.2.6, then to 10.2.8. I recall I had two saved 10.2.6 updates. One worked, one didn't. I believe you want the 10.2.6 combined update called build 6L60. I think that one let's you update from10.2.1. You can use the 10.2.8 Combo from there.
