On Win2k or Win2k3 there is no way I've found of preventing them, but I haven't looked too hard; there probably is. On Samba-based systems you can do the following in the smb.conf file. Add these two lines to each section defining a share: veto files = /.DS_Store/ delete veto files = yes Now those annoying files will never appear.
