Wayne --- end of quote --- Seems so to me too, but apparently for what ails this tape, it is what the doctor ordered. The machine is clean and only exhibits this problem on certain tapes, all, I suspect of the same brand from the same years (early 90's.) According to the article I cite below, the "scream" I get when the tape runs through the machine is due to oxide shedding which is a failure of the chemical binder that holds the oxide to the backing. I remember having this problem with audio reel to reel tapes years ago. Heating the tape to 120F re-cures the binding and can be repeated over time as it occurs again. This guy says it is fool proof and harmless. My only concern at this point is using it on fragile Hi8 tape, since the sources I've found are talking about audio and heavier video tapes. This is an article by Rich Rarey, an engineer at NPR. http://www.radiocollege.org/readingroom/articles/craft/baking.php I'll be trying this and will report back.
