Sorry, forgot to mention. I am running a 68 pin pin drive happily in my G3 beige with a 68 pin PCI card, I think its made by adaptec. Before I installed OS X however, I *NEEDED* to access OS 9 to install a firmware version for the card so that I could run OS X through the 68 pin drive and the card. It is where my current OS X partition resides happily now. Adapters can be bulky and a headache. AFAIK the firmware upgrade to be able to install and run OS X can only be run on OS 9.
In a case like that, you *will* need OS 9. Other than that you don't. But keep in mind, a 50 pin drive is painfully slower than a 68pin one and I forget all the other disadvantages it has too.
