hey out there,

i'm having real time lags in connecting from our macs running os x 10.3 to
pc's running win xp pro. i have a feeling this is something between the os's
rather than machines as the two pc's we have running win 2000 are super
fast.

basically, we do apple k, click the smb://ip_address_here (still cant
believe apple have done this - can we make it easier please?!) and it tries
to connect for around 2 mins at which point it brings up the
username/password.

is this a know issue or do i need to look harder at the settings in the
machines?

any thoughts are good,

jake

p.s. one thing i'll mention: i had a real nightmare copying large amounts of
files between a mac and our pc server which is a slightly older machine.
every time it got to around 50 or so files, the mac would bring up an error
message saying that some files could be copied 'cos they weren't found...

it turned out that norton antivirus on the pc was scanning each file as it
was copied - this included all the invisible os x files too and the
processor/hard drive/network didn't seem to be able to catch up. once i
disabled norton, no problem.

this is the same for zip files. if you use the built in 'create archive'
option in os x or dont set up dropstuff correctly, it'll archive all the
invisible files.

this means that the zip file we'd uploaded for a windows client that
contained 300 files actually contained 601 files (.DS_store and a duplicate
._filename file for each file). when we set dropstuff to ignore desktop
files, it reduced the archive by 15mb and had the correct number of files!

worth thinking about....
