Most of the problems these guys see in the machine seem to have to do with the tuner, which I have no use for. And noise, the thing has an internal fan. But since it sits in my console next to my Beige Minitower, which has three fans, noise isn't an issue. So far the video quality in copies made from Hi8 tapes is as good as any I've done in the Mac with an external (camcorder) digitizer, but in far less time. I'll still edit DVDs on the Mac, but for archiving old tapes, this thing is a dream. The quality at the two hour setting is very good, better than I see in iDVD with only 90 minutes available (I don't see any of the motion artifacts that appear in iDVD at the 90 minute setting.) I also expect to be able to run firewire from the Mac to the DVD recorder with Final Cut in print to tape mode. That would give me titles and real editing capability, though not control over chapters without having to wait for iDVD to finish encoding, then burning. It's a great technology. I do like this unit, which is available at Radio Shack for $250. There's $50 rebate through Feb 5, which is what sold me. (It's the Liteon 5006.)
