Well, perhaps it was too obvious to mention, but you already have a BSD
Unix (or a clone, only a lawyer cares) running under OS X. You can pull up
a terminal and type away into the shell. Most Unix/Linux apps can or have
been ported. No need to emulate anything.
And thus you describe my primary draw to the OS. I work with BSDs day in and out for a living. Being able to sit down and use all that knowledge on an OS that also has a good commercial desktop app base... niiiice.
Being able to dig myself out of a hole with the terminal, even better. : )
