My original question wasn't all about the legalities of the issue, but also whether any list members had done the same, and what their experiences were in doing so. I got basically what I expected, and have comfort in knowing that so far no list member has gone to court over what we're thinking of doing.
I spent 13 years as a mobile DJ and never thought twice about paying for the right to spin what I chose. I was never approached by any copyright lawyers during those years, and I seriously doubt anyone would pay me much mind now.
I do appreciate the responses, including the "conversational" ones, as they were entertaining to read :)
So again, if anyone has done or is doing something similar to what we're planning, I'd love your feedback, good or bad, as we're looking for ideas, experiences, etc.
Thanks again!

Years ago I worked for a guy who worked at a TV station and had a wedding video business on the side. I would videotape the wedding and important elements of the reception. DJ's or bands were at these private functions playing licensed music in a facility making money on the hall rental. My "guess" is that some (probably not all) facilities pay a small yearly ASCAP/BMI (whatever) blanket fee for performing/playing rights of such music. This music could be heard in the background on the recordings we made. In addition we would use whatever song the bride and groom requested layed down in editing in a special photo collage effects piece we did on every tape. Bottom line is these videos and the service were sold to private individuals for their private event with varying content and not mass distributed. That is the key factor in why nobody would bother to come after my former employer to collect rights fees. Now, if you are using rights-protected materials and making profit by selling to the public at large you better expect legal ramifications. Even photographing and selling images of someone else's property could be an issue.
