Wasn't it originally 512k that would be more than enough? That's what the first Mac had.

Mine had 512 and I paid plenty to have the Mac dealer up it to 1 meg. It was a big deal and something to brag about, having a whole meg of memory. You could run a lot more stuff with a whole meg. But apps were starting to get so big that they almost need their own floppy instead of having both the operating system and the app on the same floppy. Then the swap game began, where the computer would keep asking for the floppy that had the system on it so that it could complete some task, and spit out the one with the app on it. You would spend a lot of time finding the floppy it needed at the moment and swapping it for the one it spit out, over and over. I can still hear the sound of that floppy drive spitting out a disk. Those were the days.
