My problem so far is that when I go to the Apple Talk setup I cannot get it
to select Ethernet on either of the G3's. It says that I should check my
connections. I have tried the simplest connection of all by using an
Ethernet cable directly from the G3 to the Apple printer. Restarted a couple
of times and I could not get a connection. What am I doing wrong? I figure
it has to be something really basic and simple, but like the good or bad
moon, I am not getting it. Can someone help me?
Usually if you can't select ethernet in OS 9, the computer can't see the hub. So it could be that a) your computers' ethernet circuits are bad, or b) your ethernet cables are bad, or c) your hub isn't working.Careful do not use Xover cables? fluff
Someone said I should use a cross over cable instead of CAT5 if I went
directly from the computer to the printer. So I used a cross-over cable. And
it made no difference.
Kathi,
"CAT5" (usually written Cat5, or Category 5) is a cable type. "Crossover" and "straight-through" are wiring designations. Both "crossover" and "straight" cables are made from category 5 cable.
Where I get hung up is selecting ethernet in the
Apple Talk panel. I go under the Apple > Control Panels > Apple Talk > and
try to switch from Printer Port to Ethernet, it will not let me. I keep
getting "An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet" & "Make sure your
network connections are correct." I don't think it is my cables, I think
there is a setting in TCP/IP that needs to be made, but I do not know what
info to enter in that panel. I do not think it is my hardware, since both
G3's act the same way. Forget the hub or router or whatever, I would be
happy if I could just get a direct hookup to work.
I should not have to call in someone to network 2 macs to a printer.
Something basic is being missed and I need some advice. Is there any kind
soul out there that can help me?
Kathi,
When you connect your cable, do you see a link light come on? There should be a link light on the printer and on the G3 very near to the ethernet port. This light will be on if you have a good connection, and off if you do not.
