thanks for the info!  obviously i haven't read the development note for a long 
time, i should read
it again!  24V is indeed easy to find surplus and you should even be able to 
find a switching supply
(more efficient).  if it were me i'd attach it physically and electrically to 
the atx supply so i
only had one cord but that would require soldering and some care since you'd be 
dealing with line
voltage (any "exposed" line voltage wires should have tubing over them for 
added insulation, this is
common in older pc's and other gear with the power switch on front, i.e. the 
switch wires will have
a piece of tubing over them to increase the insulation and decrease the leakage 
current should
anything touch the insulation).  28V shouldn't be hard to find either if you 
wanted but if the
firewire spec allows for 24V there's no reason unless some gear needs the added 
wattage available at
the same current but higher voltage and hence wattage.
