One, to a large extent all MOST people throughout history have cared for nothing but how much money they make. This is a human condition.
We are, by and large, greedy little bastards caring for nothing but ourselves, who routinely accomplish heroic acts of selfless kindness and sacrifice. Trite, yes, but also the truth.
We're all both demon and angel, drudge and artist, lover and killer, to quote 10,000 forgettable rock songs...
The people we KNOW about, that history is written of, are as the ads put it, "...the rebels, the dreamers..."
Two, the past doesn't have a richer creative history, it's just that time has applied a pretty serious crap filter to it all. Like all crap, this too shall pass.
Three, just because YOU think the G5 is ugly and utilitarian, doesn't mean it's not a thing of beauty, or some hellish conduit to mindless IBM dronehood.
