As usual, (thinking can be dangerous sometimes) question generated. The OSX 8Gig partition limit, is that for SCSI disks as well as ATA/IDE?

No.

Makes sense! I was trying to do a backup of the boot volume.

Don't, or use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the boot volume to another disk drive. <http://www.bombich.com> Also see his hints on moving the /Users to another partition, which frees up a LOT of space on a 8gb volume. Finally, if you did a standard install, use Delocalizer (also on his web site) to remove a whole lot of extraneous language files.

I can see where a straight 'copy' operation could go bad, what with all the "hidden" files that I assume 'copy' doesn't bother with. But doesn't 'Disk Copy' utility get the 'hidden' as well as all the rest?

(I know it isn't really that productive, but sometimes I get stubborn)

It SHOULD be possible to make 'backup' copies of things on the boot disk, without all this 'hoop jumping'.

I say 'hoop jumping' because I booted from a DIFFERENT HD, logged in as 'root', and still got the 'permissions' error.
So it isn't 'something in use', and as 'root' it shouldn't be a 'permissions' thing. Reminds me of some of the 'Windows' "gotcha's".
