Richard, you have two solutions at your disposition:
1.- just click and drag the icon that you want out of the dock and release it: pooff it'll dissapear, its just an alias.


2.- In the right side of the dock, there is a small black vertical line, (next to the @ sign) if you click and drag on it, you can change the size of the dock.

Presto chango...!!
