My suggestion is, keep playing around with the Beige G3 for now, before you
get into the expense of a G4. Sounds to me you're not very knowledgeable with
your G3 yet. There is many ways to troubleshoot a CD-ROM that's not showing
up. As a matter of fact, when I installed OS X, the same thing happened to me.
It seems that OS X somehow dissables the CD-ROM for 9.2. Try these:

1. Make sure your Apple CD/DVD Driver extension is active. Just go to the
Apple Menu/Control Panel/Extension Manager. Scroll to "Extensions", it
shouldn't be too far down, make sure is checked marked.

2. Reset your parameter-ram (PRAM). To do so, restart your mac and press
all these keys together: Apple-Option-P-R, if you've done it correctly the mac
will chime once more and reset the clock and the settings OS X modified.

3. If all of this fails, try inserting the CD in the drive AS SOON as you
see the first extension icon on screen when you boot the mac, that way by the
time the mac loads the CD driver, its reading the disk at the same time. This
is only a temporary solution and you must repeat the proccess everytime you
want to use a CD. At least you can get around to finish installing OS X this
way.

4. If #3 annoys you too much search in the web for a freeware third party
driver. I am using the toast software which includes CD driver. I might be
able to find something for that might help too, contact me off list.

BTW did you upgrade the firmware for your Adaptec SCSI ADPT 2940UW card? You
mentioned you have a G3, it is very likely you have this card. Before
installing OSX you need to upgrade the firmware or you will be in big trouble.
To
find out if you have one, go to the Apple System profiler click on the "Devices
And Volumes" tab and look at the contents in your PCI slots.
