The intention was to provide an internal FW link to internally mounted FW drives, when native ones materialized.
They never really did.
I have a cable connected to mine, snaked out through the floppy disk opening (the FDD is long gone) fro easily connecting my Video camera, rather than fussing around in back.
They can also be used to provide a connection for front-mounted ports like you can find for PC's.
