I had an awful time trying to get a Western Digital drive to work in my Firewire
usb2 enclosure. Messed with master slave and cable select, formatting elsewhere
then dropping it in the enclosure. Never did work, so it went back to BestBuy
and I bought a Maxtor, which was what I originally had in there in the first
place. Worked like a charm right away.

So there are compatibility issued with drives in Oxford bridge devices. I don't
know why, or which. I know that particular Western Digital didn't work in that
particular enclosure, a no name I bought on ebay. The original Maxtor I put in
there worked fine for a couple of years until I dropped it (ugh.)

I'd say, try another drive.
