I have finally given up on my built-in ethernet port and gone with a D-Link
PCI ethernet card. All my cables and routers and hubs work fine. And it is
true that a standard CAT5 "straight-through cable worked fine. So it wasn't
anything to do with cables or routers or hubs or switches. It was a dead
ethernet port on both of my G3's. Oh, and I shut down my CPU's every night,
but leave all my hubs and routers and cable modems on. And I never switch
any cables at all, without shutting everything down first.
