(1) I've looked on the list archive, but I can find little help about
what OS X version I can run on this Mac. Is there a web page or an email
thread somewhere that explains my options?
Look up your machine at lowendmac.com where you likely joined this list. Look under Computer Profiles in the right hand column of the home page.
(2) Does OS X come with C and C++ compilers? Assembler?
OS X 10.3 Panther came out with "XCode Tools" for developers on a separate CD or on the DVD. I don't know what's inside. Dig further, maybe in one of the other lists at lowendmac.com or at:
