Is "Open Office" actually Word, or does it just open the documents? I've

giving it up-- AppleWorks isn't remotely as good, in fact the couple of
times I've tried it it's driven me goofy. Same goes for Photoshop, even
if
you only need a few of its gazillion capacities, losing those few is
likewise unimaginable. As for Acrobat, I need it to *create* PDFs, not
to
read them. Anyway as previously stated, I'm going to try X, but with
many
reservations.

Open Office is a clone of M$ Office. It is very similar for most things
and the differences are fairly easy to learn. The last review said that
it opened about 92% of Word documents correctly, and over 97% with just
minor formatting issues. All things considered it is a very good
program. Though I am really looking forward to version 2.0, I have been
enjoying the beta versions. The GIMP is also a very good mature
program. I would use it more except that I do have access to Photoshop
CS when I need it. The current version of The GIMP is probably
equivalent in functionality to Photoshop 5/6. Lastly OS X has built-in
PDF generation (probably through GhostScript) so unless you need to
generate PDFs with fill-in forms or some other advanced PDF features you
should be ok with the built-in software.
