Increase magnification of the Dock. Mine's pretty big. Hard to 'miss'.
I'm not you. I'm terrible at sports, too. Plus there's the wait factor for the Dock to pop up.
Just select the item to be trashed and hit <cmd><delete>. No aiming, no magification needed. You don't even have to remember where the trash can is. This has been around at least since 9.1.
