Check the cabling -- maybe the school disconnected them to stop the kids
loading stuff on them.

Or maybe they're just full of dust, get something to blow them out (not
in!). Finally, a floppy-cleaning kit -- a teflon disk with some cleaning
fluid -- might work.

I think that all Mac 1.44 drives are compatible.

Do you have a bootable CD? If so, then try that, see if they work when
booted from CD.
