I've seen full blown DV camcorders from Samsung on sale for $149. Makes the iSight seem way overpriced in comparison. I agree with Bruce, go for the double duty setup. Many DV camcorders also have analog AV inputs and live DV pass-through which means you can also capture any analog source digitally and toss live TV or anything else onto your system.
For really cheap an eBay USB webcam and Macam driver with iChatUSBCam or Video Viewer will look really slow and jerky but you can get the idea of what's going on perhaps? You need a Firewire connection for totally smooth video or iChatAV.
