And there's your problem in a nutshell - not enough RAM. I was having a lot of problems with my 256 MB Mini and figured out what was wrong by opening up the Activity Monitor - all my memory was being eaten up by the system. If I open a couple of applications it's ALL being used. If I open a single large application like Photoshop Elements it becomes so slow it's almost unusable.

I could really use a bargain when it comes to ram, anyone?

Macs now use standard PC memory, and older models aren't as picky about RAM. Check the Sunday sale papers for stores like Office Depot, Office Max, and Best Buy. Online check out http://www.pricewatch.com/ .

meanwhile I have no idea if OSX can be configured for Virtual Memory

Yes, all modern systems use Virtual Memory. Yes, it is turned on by default (I don't even think it CAN be turned off in OS X).

I am now so glad I've had some experience with Linux over the last few years (my partner uses it almost exclusively). I'm trying to talk him into getting a Mac as his next office computer to replace the 336 MHz BookPC he was using up until last month when the tiny proprietary power supply died. A mini would be perfect for him - small enough to hide from view at school - and he could easily carry it home over the breaks in his briefcase. (He works at a small private university with VERY poor security and a long history of computer theft.) And yes, they did provide him a decently powered computer (finally! - the last one they provided was a Pentium I that nobody else wanted), but it's a huge heavy laptop that he hates - it requires it's own briefcase to carry and has never really worked right with Linux.
