A PC-using friend of mine asked me to use my Mac to open a program that is on a floppy disk from 1994. My floppy drive (actually an Imation SuperDisk drive) does not recognize it; the floppy does not mount and I don't even get the dialogue box saying that the disk is unreadable and offering to initialize it. The drive does recognize 720KB PC-formatted disks and 1.44MB disks.

I would guess that the unrecognizeable floppy must be an older Mac 400 or 800KB format. Does this sound correct?

That sounds about right.

I checked Apple Knowledge Base and it tells me that 400KB floppies were not supported in OS 8. I can't find anything about 800KB floppies.

That's correct.

It seems that I will have to find someone with a Mac running OS 7.x and a floppy drive, no? Any advice appreciated.

800 K floppies were supported through OS 9, iirc. Yeah, your best bet is someone with an older Mac. He MAY be able to use this <http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/> They offer a free trial.

However, 400K disks aren't readable in PC drives, 800K disks are.
