and hook up an external monitor. Can this be done?

Yes. On the bottom there's a single screw, when that's removed you can take off the bottom panel, and the internal monitor is plugged in with a standard Mac monitor plug.

We've been using an older external Mac monitor on our Rev. B like this for several months, ever since the flyback transformer shorted out and it wouldn't start at all. Pulling that monitor plug pretty much shuts down the iMac's built in monitor, and let ours boot up and run fine.

I'm pretty sure that this can be done on all of the tray-loading G3 iMacs.

Is there an actual video card or is it part of the motherboard?

Part of the motherboard, sorry.

Good luck!
