I guess this makes for a somewhat smooth (although not quiet) entry into the G-List for me being it was my first post and all as well. I've actually been following postings for a few weeks via the web page.
I guess I'll use this as an opportunity to give a proper hello to the rest of you. I've been on the Supermac (and Swap List) list for a few years now. ( I recognize a few names here from both). I was last running a G4 500 on an s900. But as mentioned, a few months ago I picked up a Sawtooth G4 450. It was actually non working so I got it fairly cheap. Talk about some major debugging to figure out what was wrong, I could go on and on, OK, the pram battery was out of juice. :) But simply changing it didn't fix things, as the vid card didn't seem to be sending a signal, yet the machine would now boot. So I took an old Twin Turbo vid card and put it in and removed the AGP card. Now everything was scrambled on the screen, but more success then I had before, so somehow this gave the machine a kick start. I shut down again, put the AGP card back in, and Wala! (sp) Got me a nice machine, which of course I now want to speed up, soup up, tune up.
Its running 10.3.8 as smooth as a kitten, but I need more then the 3 sticks of 128. Maybe one of these days I'll get a 1 ghz cpu, then I'll be happier.
But funds aren't exactly flush right now so I will need to be patient for the short term. I'm sure there will be lots of great ideas I will pick up here, and I hope I can occasionally offer a bit of good advice for others.
Which brings me back to you David Barnes, You're Very Welcome!
(Oh if you do any freelance writing for any of the big publications surrounding environmental issues, boy have I got a project for you)
Great meeting everyone!
Dave
