OS X updates generally come in two versions, a step update and a combo update. The combo update will work with any prior version of that major release. So, the 10.3.9 combo update will work with anything back to 10.3.0. Combo updates are also the most reliable, especially on older equipment.

A larger, faster ATA HD will be faster than the 6 MB drive you now have. It will be faster still with a PCI ATA card.

SATA is not interchangeable with ATA. If you want to use an SATA drive, you'll have to install an SATA PCI card.

There are, however, adapters to connect an ATA drive to an SATA connection (and possibly vice versa?) but in any case, the drive would run at the slower speed, i.e. if you had an ATA drive connected to SATA, what's the point, as it will only run at the drive's rated ATA speed (ATA/33 ATA/66 ATA/100 or ATA/133)
Of course the use of such adapters eliminates having two drives on one connection/bus as well, so there isn't very many cases where their use would be practical.

1. Is there a similar deal with installing X? Do I
need to have one base version before I can update to
the next? Or are pretty much all the versions of X
standalones? (going into a b&w g4'd500mhz with 512 mb
ram and 6G HD-->see next question)

2. On a b&w : to get a larger and faster hard drive,
is it necessary to have a special PCI card(sata), or
can I get by with a 7K or 10K hard drive using the b&w
ATA interface?
