Edie,

Thanks for the tips. I downloaded both those apps, and they're pretty neat, especially Text Wrangler.

But when they open those broken TextEdit docs they just show a blank page. So I guess the info is gone. I can't figure out how it happened, but I'm not going to trust TextEdit with important data anymore.

Anyway, I'll get some use out of these neat text programs you pointed me to. So some good came of this, thanks to you and the others trying to help. I appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Tom

Thanks for the ideas Wayne. I tried dropping the doc on the TextEdit icon in the dock and the result was the same: a box popped up with a message saying "TextEdit Open Failed." Other TextEdit files open fine this way, but not these two busted ones.

I tried Word 98 (in Classic mode), which can open .rtf files, and it did open the docs, but the pages came up empty, not even any garbage. Get Info shows the bigger doc at 32 kb, so there should be something in it, but it doesn't show any content.

I downloaded a copy of Smultron and tried opening the doc, but once again it showed an empty page.

So, I guess the data is lost. This really shakes my faith in TextEdit as a safe place to store info, if it can just suddenly get corrupted like this for no apparent reason.

Thanks again,

Tom

Tom, Try Tex-Edit Plus before you give up. [great shareware] <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/9013>

I think the free "TextWrangler" will do the same, but I haven't used
it. <http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/index.shtml>

If your files open you can clean them up and save as rtf or txt and
then TextEdit should handle them again.
