Bruce and John, Since you were so kind as to reply to my query, I'd like to let you know that I've sort of managed to solve my problem, at least in the sense that I can get on IRC now. IRCle is still screwed up on the G3, though the same client with the exact same configuration works perfect on my "new" Powerbook 5300c, but from the G3 I can get on IRC with either ShadowIRC or MacBitchX.
