I swear by Cambridge SoundWorks PCWorks Amplified Multimedia/Computer Speakers, http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/store/category.cgi?category=spk_multimedia&item=c1pcwzzzz, they are under USD $50, and the sound is fantastic for what you pay. Of course, audiophiles would point out that you get what you pay for, but I honestly can't tell the difference between those, and my $100 4.1 speakers (different brand, can't remember which one). I have used the Cambridge ones on a 7300, G4 Yikes, and Dual 2.5 ghz G5. I know they'd work on your iMac.
