I thought I read somewhere that OS X on a beige can only boot from a "master" drive. If the CD-ROM is set to "slave" while the hard drive is set to "master" then the bootable OS X disk won't boot. In theory, you would need to switch the master/slave relationship so that the CD-ROM is master to do the install, and then switch it back after the install is complete so that the HD is master.

That has been correct for me with all the beige G3's I have worked with.

I am mildly surprised that installing OS X on a different computer and putting the drive back would even boot at all, considering the different architectures of the two machines.

No more surprised than I was. I had a drive installed in one of my beige G3's that later I decided to install in an slot loading imac for one of my grandkids. After swapping the drive in I turned the iMac on and the darn thing booted 10.3 just fine. What made it more incredible to me was that when the drive was in use in the beige, it had been formatted and used on an Sonnet ata 133 card!

I have used this same procedure on a B&W which just simply failed to start the install from a stock CD and I had no way of getting the machine to force boot from the CD using any other methods. I think the answer as to why it can do so is in your profiler, /about this mac/more info/extensions. Look at all the kext files (kernel extensions) in their for hardware you don't have installed on your machine. It also explains Native support for some hardware you may have added to your Mac and you didn't need to install any additional drivers.

As always of course, YMMV. ;)

Don

Hi Michael,

Yep, I have done it this way several times but, In order to stabilize the system you should run disk repair and permissions repair. Now that you have OS 10 running, you may be able to use it to set the boot drive as the install CD, then run repairs from it. In my case, disk repair found inodes that were incorrectly mapped. Permissions repair spent nearly an hour fixing all the bad or wrong settings for my machine. Of course YMMV as usual.

Don

As said, I don't have OS 9 but I guess my cdrom just won't boot anything, so I grabbed an empty hd, put it into a colleagues G4, installed 10.2, put it into the g3 and it works now. Only it seems to be quite unstable,
