Hi all,
Quite new here so, forgive the basic questions please:
1) I have just acquired a beige g3 running OS8.1. Is it possible to network the beige with my B&W G3 running OS X 10.2.8?
Yes. Appletalk is pretty much independent of OS version.
The B&W also has OS 9.2.2 and OS 8.5. Do both computers need to have similar OS's to network?
Nope.
How do I go about setting up the network?
1) Get either a crossover ethernet cable (if you look at the two ends side by side, facing the same way, the colors are in a different order) or two regular ethernet cables and an ethernet hub (I usually buy mine used from the Goodwill Computer Works for about $10. You can get new for $30 or so).
2) connect the machines, either via the crossover or through the hub. If through the hub, plug both cables into the non-uplink ports.
3) depending upon which machine you want to mount on the other, you can go about this several ways:
a) if you want to mount the OS 8x (or 9x) booted machines on the other, go to Control Panels=>File Sharing, enter a user name, pass, and machine name, and click the Start button. (best not to do program linking - it's pretty slow).
b) if you want to mount the OSX machine on the 8x or 9x, go to System Prefs=>Network=>Appletalk and click the box for Make Appletalk Active. Make a note of your machine's IP address. Make sure you have the Appleshare extension installed on your 8x/9x machine.
4) To mount the OS 8 or 9 machine on OSX, pull down the GO menu from finder to to Connect To Server (command-k). Wait for a bit and you should see the name of your other machine come up. Click, enter the remote machine's user name and pass, and choose the HD(s) you want to mount. They'll show up on the desktop.
To mount the OSX machine on 8 or 9, go to Chooser, click on the Appleshare icon on the left, and click on Server IP address on the right. Enter the OSX machine's IP address, cross your fingers, and hit OK. I've had less success going in this direction...
2) Can the two computers share a dial-up connection? Can both computers be connected to the internet simultaneously?
It's possible, but I'll leave that explanation to someone else since I've never done it through the OS's network sharing ability - i've always used routers.
