Still I remain confused on the USB issue. If I want to use a USB card adapter (for PCMCIA, Flash, Smart, etc.) do I need a USB PCI card first?

No. Your B&W already has two USB 1.1 ports on it, All you need is the adapter (I found a 9-in-one reader on froogle.com for something like $6 or $8 shipped.

If so, since Bruce tells me the G3 is USB 1.1,;

Yes it has two USB ports in the back of the system...your keyboard is plugged into one. If you have an Apple keyboard, there's a very convenient port right there on the keyboard for things like media readers.

do I need a 1.1 PCI card and a 1.1 adapter.
Or does one just add the 2.0 card and adapter and it funnels down to 1.1 speeds?

You only need a USB 2.0 adapter if you want to support USB 2.0 speeds.

Pete, thanks for the excellent url for PCMCIA info.
You are right, I'm sure I have a "PC card PCMCIA hd"
If I network the G3 with my 3400 then I could get by without a PCMCIA adapter.
But, I'm not ready to upgrade my camera so I need the flashcard adapter.
I've been using a PCMCIA flash card adapter to transfer photos.

Like I said, I got a media reader very cheap. It reads the flash card I've got with my camera. If you're using a "flashcard" adapter then you don't have a camera with a full pcmcia memory card. You wouldn't need an adapter for that.
