I have been buying Crucial memory for my Rev. 2 B&W. Not the cheapest but very trustworthy. I want to buy another two 256MB sticks while I can. But, paying less sounds good if I won't regret it after a few years or more of use. Crucial is charging $79.30, up about ten dollars from a year ago.
I looked at the listings on the OWC web site, and they sell their OWC brand for $59.97 and the Techworks brand for $84.99. I called OWC sales to ask what the difference is. I specifically asked about differences in chip sourcing and assembly quality, but didn't get an answer on that. I was told that the OWC brand is not reliable on Rev. 1 B&Ws due to a certain logic board in those models, but that it is fine for the Rev. 2 models. The salesman told me that the Techworks brand is compatable with a wider range of models, including the Rev. 1 B&W, thus its higher price. This contradicts what the listing for the OWC brand says because it claims to be compatable with all B&Ws. The Techworks brand listing does claim compatability with ten Apple models and the OWC brand listing claims compatability with seven Apple models. Has anyone using OWC brand memory in a B&W experienced failure after long term use? I am still wondering if the OWC brand is of lower grade manufacturing quality than the Crucial or Techworks brands.
