Hi,

I have two big concerns about the move.

1) Having a CPU that runs x86 code, it would be a lot easier to write a multiplataform virus. It should only check what kind of OS you are running and then perform the appropiate attack. It existed already such a virus many years ago, it attacked different flavors of unix internet servers. IMHO the intel-pseudoMacs wil be as secure (or insecure) as linux running in a PC clone.

Which is to say as secure from Win viruses as macs. Viruses attack the OS, not the CPU.

2) The last CPUs announced from intel will have built in hardware for DRM. Wich kind of limitations will we have to manipulate the different kinds of data ?

Some CPU's can use this. I suspect this is how Apple will ensure that OS X only runs on Apple hardware. as for the other uses, I suspect people will scream bloody murder, or vote with their feet on DRM issues. ITMS has shown that people will accept some level of DRM, so long as it's not onerous.

It's not like they're waiting to rent you Microsoft word and hold your data hostage.

Without doubt, OS X is a lot easier to use than linux.
But, is that enough to justify the premium price and the menace of DRM ?

You're kidding, right? try "OS X is usable." Linux, as far as it's come, is opnly marginally usable on the desktop, and certainly not across the range of apps the Mac has. Yes you can word process do spredhseets, email and web browse just as easily on the Linux desktop, but combine photographs and stills of your kid's 6th birthday party along with music into a movie that you burn to a DVD for her grandparents to watch on a linux box.

Now do it like iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD let you do it, without thinking about the computer at all...
