I've successfully installed 10.4 on this Blue and White (well
almost). I did it using the original drive that came with it, a 6
gig but it starts up very slowly and and sometimes not at all.
I tried starting up in verbose mode to see what's going on and keep
seeing the message Disk IO Failure....that means the HD is dying,
right?
Anyway, I purchased the ACard from NewEgg and it'll be here in a
couple of days also I bought a 256 ram stick from Crucial. I put the
G4 500 processor upgrade back in and it's working fine.
Even OS 9 only works for a short time, I get the OS installed and
then after a while it refuses to allow installation of programs.
This leads me to believe that as I mentioned above....the hard drive
is dying. So, within a few days, I'll have it up and working.
Interesting thing I thought about is that with all the money I've put
into this thing, I could have just bought a Mac Mini....but that
wouldn't have been as fun.
Reading everybody's input on the topic has been very helpful and I
wish to thank you all.
I'll keep you updated. Then the problem will be what do I really
want to 'do' with this computer. We already have 4 other Macs that
are more powerful. Sell it maybe? Put it in the kitchen? It will
have a wireless card in it......we'll see.

Ahhh YES EC - that's exactly what I would like to know (I/O error) and
have never received a response to my question on several Mac lists I'm
on, including this one. I get an I/O error too when I run Applejack and
single user mode to repair permissions (Yep I have a Blue&White too,
Rev 1) though it's rather cryptic - disk06 I/O error (I finally figured
out disk 06 is my startup drive!!) but then it says ATA drive claims
(something) flushCache ext (something) not claim extended LBA feature
support (I wrote so fast I can't read my writing) but I've searched
google and tons of other places and never found an answer to this. I
certainly HOPE the drive is not dying. That would mean the THIRD
reinstall for OSX since March 2005, as you can't just drag and drop
your system folder like good old 9.2.2. Arduous task on even an
upgraded to 800 mhz Blue&White.
Wondering, can you drag and drop the entire VOLUME onto another new
drive in OSX? I don't see why not, that way it would copy over all
those "invisible" "Important" system files that are strewn about the
hard drive, eh? But I've heard it cannot be done, to use CCC or other
cloning apps even disk utility will do it. I sure miss the drag-n-drop
system folder stuff dearly.
As for your installation woes, I feel yer pain. A new drive certainly
wouldn't hurt, now would it? If you have 4 other more powerful Macs, I
wouldn't even bother tho. Yes, you can get at least $80 for it, sell
the sucker on ebay if you get too frustrated. They are hot little
items.
