I know this should be easy, but I am frustrated with what should be a

How can I write in Word so he can open it in Works, since it does not
seem
to be a simple as I originally thought it would be?

You might try saving your document as "Works for the Macintosh" I have
that option in my "Word" however I still think that it will have to be
opened from with-in the application, especially if your friend is using
a WINTEL
