drives you have you should be able to shuffle the data off the drive,
format it,
and put it back pretty easily. Unfortunately, i am not aware of what

programs are for formatting 3rd party hard drives.

Yep, as I suspected, the FAT32 did add a bit of overhead as there had
to be some translation required for this action. The drives have all
been reformatted as Mac Extended and seem to perform much better now.
BTW, I just used Disk Utility in 10.2 to reformat the drives. Worked
fine.
