I syuppose you are running OS 9. Check the following:
- Open the control panel TCP/IP
- Select "User mode" (or whatever it's called in English) from one of
the menues
- Choose "Advanced" and OK
This gives you a Options-button in TCP/IP. Click it, and make sure
"Load only when necessary" is ticked ON. If it's off, your Mac will try
connecting every few minutes
If you were on a broadband connection (DSL) it should be clicked OFF
