Hmmm. I wish I was more specific. let me rephrase. I sure wish I could turn off all this eye candy is OS X so that OS X would run more efficiently on my
450MHz G4, which was a supercomputer 5 years ago.

You're still missing the point, Chris. OS X is not inefficient - it is just doing a lot.

Actually, that is exactly what you are asking for. Apple, like most computer hardware or software vendors, uses a business process known as planned or controlled obsolescence. They plan for hardware to become obsolete over time - to ensure continued hardware sales. They need us to occasionally buy new computers, and in return they give us more goodies (iLife, Aqua, etc.).

I just want an OS that wont run terribly slow on say, a 400MHz G3.

I have a B&W G3/300 with only 384MB RAM, and Panther runs just fine on that. Now, I'm not trying to run Adobe Photoshop on it, but for basic tasks there's nothing wrong with it.

I just want an OS that does its job, and
doesnt hog my CPU for things I dont care about. Dont get me wrong, I like OS X, I just wish I could tone down the graphics so that it ran better on my 450MHz G4 with 896MB RAM, and a Radeon 9200 with 128MB VRAM. A computer that cost almost $500. In other words, I wish I could run OS X on cheaper Macs. Id like all the stability, reliability, and power of OS X, but none of the eye
candy.

Why can't you run OS X on cheaper Macs? As I said, I'm running it on a B&W G3/300 - slower than your machine - and it runs fine. I expect when I finally get Tiger on there, Tiger will run even better.

Well, there's always Linux or BeOS.
