OWC has a nice jumper settings matrix in the tech section of their
website for these models.
I forgot all about the firmware update. To do this you have to boot
from an installed copy of OS 9 (not the cd); I just went trhough this
dance with my GigE G4 at home. I had to do a firmware upgrade before
I could use my new G4 1Ghz.
The jumper settings matrix will show you what you need to do to
overcloick it as well.
ALWAYS press the CUDA switch after a CPU change.

Many thanks Bruce, I will get the info now!

I went to the PowerLogix website also, you are right, not much there!
Their support is pretty much nil for your upgrade ZIF. I think someone
else suggested a site for the firmware upgrade, but if you still have
problems finding it, here is the one I used for my FastMac similar
upgrade.

As for jumpers, if you are planning to put your 400 Mhz ZIF in your
beige machine, you will also need to change jumpers there, so be sure
to factor in enough for both. I just happened to have some old Seagate
large SCSI HD's which use those sized jumpers and I had plenty that
way. My FastMac upgrade was a 450 Mhz G4, which I overclocked to 500
Mhz and it's been very stable at that speed. I never tried for
anything higher than that. The speed increase was noticeable over the
original 400 Mhz G3, but I'm sure the 1Ghz G3 would be faster than my
G4. HTH
