IBM rep: we could provide an 'end-to-end' product line for Apple

Apple CEO Steve Jobs' claims that moving to Intel processors from
PowerPC chips mean better wattage are unfounded, IBM tells eWeek.
Yeah, and the tooth fairy served as a secondary source on that story ;-)
This is pure self-serving BS spin on the part of IBM.
Apple would not have ever considered the massively disruptive change
this represents if IBM could (or would) do what they're saying here.
I mean, it's not like Steve threw a hissy fit and said 'Fine, I'm
taking my toys to Intel!' A CEO doesn't take the massive hit to a
companies bottom line this transition could have if they weren't
totally convinced (to the satisfaction of the BOD) it's necessary and
desirable.
The truth is in the market. IBM could not deliver the G5 speed
increases promised over a year ago, and Freescale could not get the
dual core G4's to market. Both were promised last year, neither are
yet on the market, nor do they seem close.
IBM moved the bulk of their design work to console chips for Sony and
Microsoft (and see Anandtech.com this week for a dissection of the
Xenon and Cell CPU's performance from the POV of game programmers and
designers.)
In both companies, these CPU lines were a *sideline* to their main
businesses. Apple will probably represent not much more of a total
customer for Intel than it was for IBM, but at least it's a 3%
customer for it's main line of products.
