What are you trying to boot from? The B&W will not boot from firewire, IIRC.

I just did some looking into that the other day myself when I
couldn't get my b&w to boot off a second drive.
When I replaced the first drive with the second, it booted properly
with no problem.
If it's a rev 1 motherboard, the IDE controller chip is unreliable.
The recommendation I read was to use a separate pci IDE controller
card.
