Ok, a general question...
Some of you were talking about Firewire external enclosures, and
then in the same breath talked about connecting by USB.
Are you referring to external enclosures which have both FW and USB
ports, and you choose to use USB?
If so, why are you not connecting by FW?
If not, why is it being called a FW enclosure if you're connecting
by USB?
I don't get it.
There are all sorts of toys you can buy :)
You can get external firewire enclosures, USB 1.1 or USB 2.0
enclosures, and external enclosures that have both firewire and USB2
connections on them.
Which you buy, depends on what CPUs you have, and what CPUs you with
to use the drive upon. People are talking about different
connections, 'cos they are using a variety of external drive enclosures.
For example, I got one of the OWC Mercury firewire/USB external
drives, partitioned it with both a MacOS and a Windows partition, and
I can hook it to most anything and put/get files off of it, depending
on which partition I use. Yes the MAc could read the PC stuff mostly
fine but I've had file naming issues one too many times, it was too
easy to partition and make sure each OS is happy.
www.bensbargains.net has links to laptop, 3.5" and 5.25" USB2
enclosures for $15 and $24 off and on, often with no shipping. There
were a couple last week. So it's really cost effective.
USB2 on Macs is pretty fast, it's not unusable by any means.
Firewire400 or 800 is better than USB2, on Macs. See <http://
www.barefeats.com/usb2.html>
USB2 really should be as fast as firewire 400, but in practice this
occurs only on Windows, the MacOS USB2 is pretty broken. .sigh.
HTH.
