Sounds like you were running the mic into the iMic.

Umm, well, that's what it's for, right? Hence the name :-D

 Probably work better with
an outboard mic preamp that you have some control over, feeding line level to
the iMic.

But why? What about the simplicity of using the device, if it works well enough for the user? It's just that it isn't good enough for _my_ purposes, is all; could be fine for others.

Note: I've done some recording before, but not with the new technology. Since I decided to build a digital project studio, I've managed to cobble together my own educational system, so that I know what I'm seeing from an audio engineering standpoint when I look at hardware specs and try to pick the brains of the experts. I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I have to make the best decisions I can, separating hype from truth, purchasing what's best for my goals, not wasting $$ on things I don't need, and taking my eyes, ears, wrists, back, and other health issues into consideration as well.

For example, I'm building the studio from recycled everything, because it's more about acoustical design for recording than looks. I can always listen, take sound measurements, and change things as I need to, but, OTOH, recording hardware is a place I'll avoid making compromises. The pieces I choose all have to be winners. I'd rather have less stuff and higher quality.

So far, that research is topping something over 700 hours at this point, not including visiting professional studios. I hope I've picked up a few tidbits of value somewhere in there.

All the best,
Ken N.
