hey out there, thanks for the replies - what a weird one?
the file has the right .doc extension so thats cool. the installation of word was an upgrade from the full version of office rather than from the test drive (it took ages to load...) but it may be worth uninstalling/reinstalling. we've subsequently have had a problem with excel: we get a 'unable to read this file' - excel then tries to repair the document and reports: damage to the file was so extensive... what is going on?! we've tried creating new documents (rather than legacy versions resaved) and get the same problems. next port of call is to check the disk drive itself and then we may have to revert to the old version of office. not good... thanks again for the replies, i'll post back if we get a solution. cheers, jake -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
