Dear List:

A friend of mine has an old beige Power Mac G3 366, which is currently gathering dust. Today I called up my friend and suggested putting this older machine to good use as a server (most likely, a file server) for his home system. This system consists of two iMacs, a G3 and G5, an Asante ethernet hub, and a networkable Lexmark laser printer. My question is: how well will this machine function as a server running Yellowdog Linux 3.x (which I have at my disposal)
for his small network?

Any feedback and suggestions are appreciated.

Roland :)

First of all, I assume you mean a 266 Mhz beige G3, since I don't think they came in the speed you mentioned. I currently use a 266 Mhz beige G3 DT for the file server in my home network, consisting of Mac and Windows machines. Mine is running OS X Jaguar (10.2.6) and has 256 Mb of RAM. It's been running for nearly a month now in this config and has performed flawlessly in this capacity. As for running YDL on the server machine, I tried this once using an X86 flavor of Linux, but never could get Samba configured right and it caused problems whenever I tried to play any MP3 files over one of the other systems on the network. LInux/Unix is supposed to be the ideal OS for a server of most any kind, but I could not work out the details to get it working properly. YMMV

If you need any other details of my system, just drop me an email off list and I will be happy to help in any way I can.

Just a message from Doug...
