My macaholic friend was over to help me install a new DVD-RW in my

fit. What are these things? ( the wide head screws 2 per corner)
Corner of what? What are you trying to take apart? I don't recall
such screws.
On my Sawtooth, I open the big side door, unplug the ribbon
connectors at the rear, and remove the shield. Then I remove the
front door cover panel. It pops off by depressing the plastic tabs on
one side and pulling it out from that side, and has short tabs that
fit slots on the opposite side -- works on kind of the same principal
the battery cover on a remote does. There are two small screws,
Phillips I think, one on either side of the media cage. After
unscrewing them, the cage should then slide forward and out, IIRC.
Once it's out, you can unscrew the CD drive and replace it with the
new DVD_RW, then slide it back in the same way it came out in reverse
order.
I could be wrong, but........

For the complete instruction on dissasembly you should get, the "G4
Install Manual.pdf" from the apple web page. It describes and shows
how to take almost everything apart.
Or goto macsales.com (OWC) and in the technical section you will find a
visual guide to many standard upgrades, including, optical drives.
The only thing you won't find there, IIRC, is the factoid that you do
not need to remove the front panel of the disc tray on the drive for
installation in a Sawtooth.
And that's a good thing because when I installed my DVR-109, I forgot
to remove it and fretted over removing the drive or not to remove that
blasted front panel.
Finally I decided to close the tray with the panel on it, but I held
the door on the front of the tower down while it closed. Then I tried
opening the tray. It worked fine. So I tried closing the tray without
holding the tower door aside. That worked fine, too. So I learned
something without breaking anything. That is the best learning there
is!
Sounds like her macaholic friend may still be running a pre-G3 machine
