Was gonna post this on Saturday, but the list was down...
Hello everyone. I did some work on the beige G3 earlier today (tried
upgrading RAM, but the stick I tried was defective; the problem
occurred when I put the old RAM back in). Unfortunately, after doing
that work, I found that I'd suddenly lost the internal audio. Neither
the front speaker nor the headphone jack on the back will output any
sound, not even the startup 'bong'. I checked the System Profiler, and
it is reporting that the personality card is "unknown", so I assume
that it might've gone bad. If so, where could I possibly find a
replacement? If that's not the case, what else might the problem be?
In addition, another problem popped up. I tried booting into OS9 to
make use of the internal floppy drive, but approx. 25% of the way into
the loading process, after the two-arrow extension (serial? I/O?)
appeared, a blank box came up with no text in it, which froze up the
computer. I [...long tale of woe...]

Sometimes the sound gets lost on beiges when you're doing work on
them...check the seating of the personality card. Also, there is a
possibility it won't boot in 9, as you say, if you've pulled the card
out, although there's no mention of the need for it in the Apple
documentation that I've seen.
